yetone/magpie

magpie is a menu bar app with a local gateway that lets AI coding agents use any provider, model, or subscription, and fail over to the next account when a quota runs out. It translates between OpenAI Chat, OpenAI Responses, Anthropic Messages, and Gemini protocols at 127.0.0.1:3425.

Project overview

It addresses a concrete pain point: each AI coding agent keeps its own config, keys, and base URLs, so subscriptions and API keys work in one agent only and quota limits stop work mid-session. magpie's atomic config rewriting preserves comments, order, and formatting while switching models per agent.

Project type: AI Agent · Model Runtime
Use cases: Coding & Development
Deployment: Refer to project documentation
License: MIT

Best for

Developers who use multiple AI coding agents and want to share providers, models, or subscriptions across them
Users who hit provider quota limits and want failover to another account

Key capabilities

Pick any model for any agent from one list; magpie atomically rewrites the agent's own config while preserving comments, order, and formatting.
A gateway at 127.0.0.1:3425 speaks OpenAI Chat, OpenAI Responses, Anthropic Messages, and Gemini, translating between them including streaming, tool calls, and reasoning.

Limitations and risks

magpie requires you to bring a provider: API-key vendors, subscriptions such as Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, or Grok, or local models via Ollama or LM Studio. Inference happens through these external services unless you use a local model endpoint.
GPU requirements are not documented.

Getting started

Setup difficulty is rated easy; the project offers a desktop menu bar GUI, a CLI, and a web GUI for interaction.
