Limitations and risks

The server-backed persistence token (NEXT_PUBLIC_PERSISTENCE_TOKEN) is visible in the public JavaScript bundle and provides no confidentiality; this configuration is suitable only for localhost or trusted-network single-user deployments.
Using the built-in PERSISTENCE_DEV_TOKEN in production exposes all learner partitions and documents to anyone who can load the page. Do not use this token in production environments.

Getting started

Ensure Node.js >= 20 and pnpm >= 10 are installed. Clone the repository, copy .env.example to .env.local, configure at least one LLM provider key (OpenAI and Anthropic models are supported), then run pnpm install && pnpm dev. Setup difficulty is medium due to environment variable and API key configuration requirements across multiple deployment paths.
PostgreSQL is required when using the server-backed persistence profile, which runs exactly two containers: the openmaic app and PostgreSQL.
