Verified project record

superdesigndev/superdesign

SuperDesign is a design agent that generates UI mockups, reusable components, and wireframes from natural language prompts inside the IDE, including Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, and VS Code. Note that this repository is no longer actively maintained and is kept only for history; the product has moved to a web app.

Project overview

It is claimed to be the first open-source design agent that lives inside the IDE, letting developers explore multiple design options instead of one through forking and iteration, while designs are saved locally and local OpenAI-compatible model servers such as LM Studio are supported.

Project type: AI Agent
Use cases: Coding & Development
Deployment: Refer to project documentation
License: License pending

Best for

Developers who design UI mockups, components, and wireframes and want to do it from natural language prompts directly inside their IDE instead of a separate design tool.

Key capabilities

Instantly generate full UI screens from a single natural language prompt.
Create reusable components users can drop into their code.
Explore low-fidelity layouts for fast iteration.
Duplicate and evolve designs easily; also update existing UI by selecting a component and describing the change.
Copy prompts into AI IDEs like Cursor, Windsurf, and Claude Code.
Generated designs are saved locally inside .superdesign/.
Users can point the extension at an OpenAI-compatible local server such as LM Studio via the OpenAI URL input.
Initialising the extension adds Cursor/Claude Code rules so the agent can do design and preview in the SuperDesign canva.

Limitations and risks

The repository is no longer actively maintained and is kept only for history; the product moved to a web app.
Since the repository is unmaintained, issues may go unpatched and no future support should be expected; evaluate this before adopting it.

Getting started

Install the extension from the Cursor/VS Code Marketplace, open the SuperDesign sidebar panel, and type a prompt such as "Design a modern login screen". View the generated mockups, components, and wireframes, then fork, tweak, and paste them into your project. An AI model provider must be configured in the extension; local OpenAI-compatible servers such as LM Studio are supported, and a user's own Claude Code or Cursor subscription can be used.
