Obsidian Mind is a self-organizing Obsidian vault template that gives AI coding agent CLIs (Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI) persistent, linked memory across sessions via git-tracked Markdown notes, hooks, commands, subagents, an MCP server, and optional QMD semantic search.
Project overview
It targets the concrete problem that AI coding agents start every session from zero, and addresses it with a vault-first, agent-agnostic design (pure Markdown, TypeScript, and shell, no SDK dependencies) plus an MCP server that lets sessions in other repositories read and write the vault.

Best for
- Developers who already use an AI coding agent CLI (Claude Code, Codex CLI, or Gemini CLI) and want that agent's knowledge to persist across sessions and machines in Obsidian-browsable, git-tracked notes.
Key capabilities
- Vault-first memory keeps context across sessions and machines; all durable knowledge lives in git-tracked brain/ topic notes browsable in Obsidian.
- A coding session in any other repository can search vault notes, read them, follow the graph, and record what it learned back into the vault.
Limitations and risks
- Without QMD, the retrieval server falls back to lexical matching and ordering gets worse.
- Without QMD, retrieval degrades to grep/lexical matching with worse ordering — plan for QMD setup if retrieval quality matters to your workflow.
- Registering the om MCP server per-repo with an absolute machine-specific path breaks collaborators and other machines if that configuration is committed.
Getting started
- Setup difficulty is medium: a wizard-driven npm install exists, but you need Obsidian 1.12+, Node 22+, git, and a separate AI coding agent CLI, and optional QMD setup involves additional commands. First path: npm install -g shardmind; mkdir my-vault && cd my-vault; shardmind install github:breferrari/obsidian-mind; open the folder as an Obsidian vault and enable Obsidian CLI; run claude/codex/gemini in the vault directory and start talking.
Alternatives and comparisons
- A self-hostable personal AI agent runtime with session and long-term memory, chat integrations, tools, MCP, and a WebUI — a broader agent platform rather than a vault template for coding agent CLIs.
- An extensible AI assistant harness with three-tier long-term memory, an auto-curated Markdown knowledge base, multi-platform channels, and multi-model support, aimed at persistent assistant operation rather than coding-session memory.
